Gap Cover Product Description
If you buy a brand new car and decide to pay a small deposit initially and pay the remaining balance in instalments then this cover could save you loads in the event of an accident or damage to the car!
Gap insurance covers the difference (or gap) between what the car is worth and what you owe on the car. It comes into play if your car is stolen or totalled (damaged to the point that repair would cost more than the car is worth) while you are still making payments.
For example, if you buy a new car for £20,000. You pay £500 as your deposit and your monthly payments are £350. Six months after buying your car, it is involved in an accident and is deemed totally damaged. The insurance company determines that your six-month-old car is now worth only £16,500.
They will pay you that amount (less your excess if the accident is your fault). Or the responsible insurer will pay you based on the market value of your vehicle on the date of accident of your vehicle. You've made six monthly payments plus your deposit, for a total of £2,600 and you still owe £17,400 on the car.
In a case like this, gap insurance would pay the £900 difference between what your insurance company have offered to pay (£16,500) and what you still owe on the car (£17,400).
If you did not have gap insurance, the extra £900 would have to come out of your pocket.
